help!
i hope there is an Apollo-Guru-In-Chief out there
somewhere.

for the last few months, i have been battling with an
sio line problem on my apollo DN3010.  Basically, it
doesn't work.  I've come full circle and once again believe
it is a software problem not hardware.

First, some background:
this is a stand alone Apollo DN 3010(8M RAM, 380M disk, CT drive,
		19" color monitor, ethernet card)
it does NOT have maintainence
my supervisor doesn't want to pay for a service call and
considers the machine a white elephant, so i'm all alone
out here--so to speak.

i have talked briefly with apollo a few times, but even tho
they try and help over the phone i can tell they'd really
rather not judge the problem without physically seeing the
machine...and since i don't have maintainence on it, i don't
want to try their patience with too many calls.

i have run CPU.DEX on it--with and without a loopback connector--
both ways (internal and external logic) came up perfectly fine.

this machine has X windows running on it (X11.r2)--and i have
turned it off and tried to get the sio line to work. As well
as turning off TCP/IP.  (this includes rebooting without them.)

the machine has crashed a number of times--and i have had to 
load up Aegis 9.7_1 into it instead of it's original 9.7_2
(since apollo never sent me the source for Aegis when i 
purchased the machine.)  I don't know if this is significant
or not.

I've tried using emt, (terminal emulation) as well as kermit.
These same programs with identical configurations work on 
other apollo's around here.

Likewise, i've checked the cables and the modems--they're ok.
emt worked originally when i got the machine 2 years ago, but
not now.

Hopefully significant:
the error i get whenever i use emt now is
Unable to open stream to SIO line: /dev/sio1 --cannot open a remote sio 
line (stream manager/open)

Funny THing I noticed:
i can run kermit from within X (sort of)--apparently it isn't seen to
be in local mode (because it tells me so when i try to connect! "Connect
only works in Local Mode") but it does seem to make some sort of 
connection within itself. i don't know.

Anyway, that's the problem.  I'm at my physical end with this problem.
I dearly hope someone out there has seen this problem before.
