If there's any way to create more than four partitions on your disk (the driver you're using must be able to handle this), this should help while waiting for TOS1.4. The problem is, indeed, the very slow FAT handling of older GEMDOS releases. Re-organizing your disk could also accelerate the FAT search if you're using a caching program because the cache hits much better if a file's FAT entries are contiguous.
