It seems that there is a modem- internal register S0 that controls the number of rings before the modem picks up. I haven't tried yet, but the consensus was that setting this register to 0 by using "echo ATS0=0 > COMn", where n is the modem's com port number, should disable this. Others also suggested seeking out a dip switch which may do the same thing in hardware. For now I will try the former, and will investigate the latter when I re-find the modem documentation.
