From your message it sounds like you are missing the last step --- The application needs to be in a directory in Workspace Manager's path. Drop the executable in ~/Apps, do "Find Tools" from the Workspace "Utilities" menu, and see if it works. This question came up about 2 weeks ago; I went into more detail back then as to why the icons are so picky about showing up.
