Sounds like a good solution to me. it seems like the standard X distribution could be a little better in allowing for this kind of thing without having to modify the distribution. There is nothing sacred about the directory structure chosen for the MIT releases. A lot of vendors change the paths anyway, as do a lot of sites that use the MIT servers.
