The message in the Subject: was actually:

Xman Error: Too many manual pages in /usr/man/man3 Try recompiling
with larger allocations

I had a look at CHANGES, README and defs.h but did not find anything
helpful.

Anybody know what to change in what file to get 'larger allocations'?
