Although there are parts of the ICCCM that are not going to change for the forseeable future, there are parts that are clearly marked as problem areas that need conventions in the future. It is also easy to see that it is a hard problem cutting over to full ICCCM conformance. Look at the discussion on xpert regarding the question of an X consortium supplied window manager which is fully ICCCM compliant. I propose, therefore that each client and window manager be able to respond to a request "What ICCCM protocol version do you speak." Naturally, there would be a "correct" version to be speaking, but at least there would be a way for applications and window managers to negotiate their conventions. -wdc
