Subject: xbitmaps on ucbvax? how to make them a background?

I have just grabbed the bitmaps on ucbvax in the pub/X/xbackground directory
and was wondering how to use them as a background. They seem to be binary files
so I don't think that I can plug them into xphoon as a different bitmap. Can
someone give me any pointers as to how to use them. I am getting tired of 
xphoon as a background on my NCD16 Xterminal. Thanks for your help,
