GNUS 3.12; Emacs 18.54.

If I have the *Subject* and *Article* buffers displayed, and nothing else,
and then I change what's in the window that had the *Article* buffer,
and then select an article in the *Subject* buffer, GNUS splits the *Article*
buffer in half.  I think that it should retain the window configuration that it
had when you entered the *Subject* buffer.
