Rob- fyi, the ersatz message-id field is produced by hermes, which was last
supported by bbn and long since abandoned.  We were never able to obtain
source code, so we've just left it available as an "as is" program.  The
hermes hangers-on are gradually thinning out as we push mm, but there are
still some left.  We do get an occasional complaint from the net about this
field, but our only recourse would be to pull the program.
