My rn documentation recommends the *m* command to order newsgroups.
The format would be:

m [name] [position]          where [name] is the newsgroup and [position]
                             is the numerical position for that group.

While this procedure is not as easy as editing .newsrc (the wisdom of which
I know nothing about), it is fairly straightforward to order 20 or 30
frequently read groups in this manner.
