While examining the news documents, and from reading these
newsgroups, I gather that dbm is a data base scheme available
under BSD that speeds the news' access of history files.

I see that some System V sites are using a form of this under the
name of dbz, ndbm, or other names I have seen.  

I have access to the uunet archives, but nothing jumps out at me
from the listings I've seen.

I'm looking for a way to speed up some very slow news processing.
Can someone steer me in the right direction?
