You are performing the equivalent of clipping the signal by turning up our amp to infinite volume. It is, however, just aacceptable and so could be used. I remember constructing a system to send audio digitally on a test bench and then unplugging the bits one-by-one to see what the decrease in quality was. We were playing a Suzzanne Vega tape through it and it was still recognisable, even listenable, at one bit. I would hesitate to say that this is "Pulse width modulation" though - that is something rather different. -Pete French.
