Of course, one would not have expected the current opposition to do much
better if they'd got in.  A friend of mine observed, uncharitably but
probably correctly, that the Liberals and the NDP could probably have
beaten Free Trade if they'd cared enough to coordinate their campaigns
and avoid splitting the anti-Conservative vote.
