I had such a problem too when I tried to read a file made on my own Turbo XT. This file was made on a Hercules card, which is monochrome. Its size was something like 1920x1040 pixels. Of course this does not fit on the Hercules card but it does fit on the Epson Printer. This way you can make very smooth looking graphics on the printer. So when you try to read this file on a VGA card the program looks at the header and says "Ah, this is monochrome, I will have to convert this". So every pixel is converted to the same colour of those 16 from the VGA card. But this costs a little more memory (4 (bits) x 1920 x 1040) / 2 = 1 Mb. Opposite to the 250K original. This is to big for DOS 640K. MS-Paintbrush will not detect this problem correctly most of the time. Solution ? I don't know.
