(My earlier comments about another DBMS company's performance were intended to be an specific indication of the kind of advantages available to DBMSs when they are able to control specific functions (like I/O, scheduling, and data cache management) which have traditionally been the domain of the O/S. As to whether you *CALL* this "embedding the DBMS in the O/S" or you call it "providing additional controls in the O/S that the DBMS can exploit" I find to be a silly semantic argument of little technical interest. (It will be a matter of marketing life and death to the independant dbms vendors and so I understand why it is important to them.) I thank Jon Forrest for his kind words about the people at ShareBase. We miss you Jon and you're welcome to come back if you-know-who goes belly up! :-) (Unfortunately) In article <5743@sybase.sybase.com>, forrest@phobos.sybase.com (Jon Forrest) also writes: > ...Sharebase 8000 ... Sorry Jon, I haven't seen ANY evidence to prove your claim and I've seen studies to indicate that the Server/8000 has better price performance than Sybase (at least for some classes of problems). They also indicate Sybase has better price / perf than "The big O" - so don't sell your stock yet! :-) I, for one, have great respect for the Sybase product and development team (well maybe one or two exceptions :-> ) and wish them luck. I don't think that ShareBase and Sybase compete much in the market and when I see a prospect that seems better suited to Sybase I tell them to look you guys up.
