Lines: 35 Users of this group: I am a first time poster to this group and need some very general information about uucp access for personal computer owners. I am forwarding a question that arose at today's meeting of the Massachusetts Assoc. of Science Supervisors who are discussing the potential creation of a network of Science educators who are interested in exchanging information and discussion in large part about k - 12 science education. I have opened my big mouth and suggested that existing uucp avenues be used rather than setting up another network system. But, the question arises: How do Schools, whose only computers are often Apple and IBM PCs engage in usenet, etc.? I have suggested that servers with modem access to other uucp sites be used. But: 1) Where do they get started. How do they find nearby uucp sites willing to give access to the net? 2) Do they need to invest in a UNIX/Xenix system for access? Are there PC packages that would allow access (especially nice if Apple or MS-DOS was supported. 3) Is there someone they can talk to? 4) What kind of costs might they expect in hardware/phone lines and intersystem access arrangements? Any anwers and information would be most welcome.
