The connection has been made possible through an arrangement with NEARNet (the New England Academic Research Network) whereby CSNET traffic passes through NEARNet to JVNCNet and from there to the NSFNet backbone. CSNET, the Computer+Science network, which is based in Cambridge, MA, provides electronic mail access to over 100 sites using Phonenet, and IP services to another twenty sites. CSNET also provides BIND-style domain name service to over 100 institutions worldwide. The new connection gives NSFNet sites much better connectivity to CSNET, to CSNET's member institutions, and to CSNET services, such as the CSNET domain name servers, the CSNET Info-Server, and the CSNET User Name Server (a directory service for finding users). CSNET plans to obtain another connection to NSFNet on the West Coast in the near future.
