If you already have ditroff, you should look very seriously at JetRoff from PC Research (uunet!pcrat!jetroff). The price is about $100, which is much better than the thousands that Elan, Xroff, SoftQuad and others charge, and for the specific case of driving a LaserJet (Plus or II), I find it to be much, much better than any of the other (high-priced) ones. I am in Europe, and I have no difficulty at all with support or updates from PC Research. The original JetRoff, which was posted to the net some time ago, supported only LaserJet II and compatible printers (and had a lot of problems at that). But Rick Richardson has done an excellent job of fixing and upgrading it over the past year. It now handles LaserJet Plus and II printers with no trouble, and even handles quite a few clones that are seriously brain-damaged. The latest release has what looks like the beginnings of DeskJet support in it, as well. Also, JetRoff lets you use whatever fonts you want; it comes with a good basic set, it supports internal and cartridge fonts, and it supports LaserJet soft fonts from other suppliers; I have a couple of sets here that total several hundred different typefaces. jw
