Let 'em use emacs.  The novice users that I have given a fully installed
GNU emacs to have loved it.  Installation isn't for a novice, but the tutorial 
is good, and the user interface is far more intuitive than vi, for example.
Just don't tell them about all the power they have, and they will be quite
happy with arrows and ^X^C.
