Who says it wasn't?  Check out the "Icon Info" option in the Finder, for
example.  It's especially impressive if you're on an AppleShare network--
there's a pop-up menu for setting access privileges for folders (much
nicer than figuring out which one of 512 possible combinations of 9 check
boxes you want :-) .

I'd never thought of that, but I'll run it by the Finderites, and maybe
they'll like it.

Pointing out things that you'd like to see changed doesn't have to mean
putting it down.  By all means, start a human interface discussion!  Not
every good idea that comes out of it will get implemented, but I bet some
of them will.

Don't assume that Apple has already thought of everything and chosen what
they thought was best.  Your biggest complaint may be something that nobody
has thought of, or something that nobody realizes you even *want*.
