I have subscribed to Open Apple (now A2-Central) for some 3 years, and 
while sometimes I get an issue that I do not enjoy (like when every other
word was promoting something on GENIE) I must say that overall it 
is more informitive and usful than any other Apple II publication 
available. 

I also know Tom & Dennis personally, and find that they are very
personable and honest, and I doubt very much if they intend on running
as you put it "a rip off". I'm very sure that a letter or phone call
to them explaining the offer you read, and what you would like them to 
do will result in satisfaction of your complaint.
