The whole thing is pretty straightforward, except that it won't answer the phone! IMHO, this is a pretty serious deficiency for a BBS... :-) Here's the setup I'm using: o Enhanced Apple //e o RamWorks (the original) with 256K o Two 5 1/4" floppies (old Disk ][ type) o Apricorn Super Serial Imager (SSC clone that I've never had any trouble with) o Prometheus 2400G modem (Hayes compatible) o Full 25-pin straight-through RS-232 cable o Breakout box on the cable, modified as shown in the Applenet docs. o SMT No-Slot-Clock, with SMT's CLOCKREAD driver installed at $0300 and my own BASIC subroutine patched into the AppleNet programs to read it. AppleNet seems to initialize the modem just fine. When a call comes in, though, I see the auto-answer LED flicker on (means the line is ringing) and the receive-data LED flicker (sending the "RING" response to my Apple, I imagine). That's it. AppleNet doesn't respond. I already checked the DIP switches on the serial card (they're identical to the banks on the SSC, except for one that indicates SSC emulation mode. That's set to "on", of course). My modem doesn't have DIPs, but I programmed into non-volatile memory the switch settings indicated in the manual. Specifically, DTR is active, word result codes are sent, it will echo characters in the command state, no auto-answer, CTS is active, and commands are recognized. (By the way, I checked the init string AppleNet sends and the init seems to contradict the manual in a couple of places.) I've let AppleNet init the modem. I forced it to NOT init the modem (by toggling power after the init was sent). I turned on auto-answer. I asserted a constant DCD and bypassed the special cable wiring. I tried various combinations of the above themes. Still, it will NOT pick up the phone. (Well, setting auto-answer on will cause the modem to pick up, but AppleNet doesn't know anything about it.) Ideas, anyone? /-----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ | It doesn't matter how good a computer it is, | Steve King (312) 991-8056 | | it can't multitask running anything and being | ...uunet!motcid!king | | turned off. | ...ddsw1!palnet!stevek | \-----------------------------------------------------------------------------/
