Help!

Old game, yes, but new for us.  My son and I are trying to finish it,
and we're stuck about halfway through.  Can someone tell me if the
screen with the swinging boulder is a) a red herring, or b) negotiable?
If a), then kindly point me in the general direction of where I should
look for hidden whatevers.  if b) then kindly hint as to the how of it;
we're tired of getting flattened by the retched thing.  (Yes, we know
how to get the shield.  For whatever dubious good it's worth.)
