FYI, the 98549 ( 1024x768 x 6 planes ) is a low cost version of the
hp98550 ( 1280x1024 x 8+2 planes ).  In the world of HP's Starbase
graphics, both of these cards are driven by the "libdd98550.a"
driver.  To the best of my knowledge, the hp98549 is covered as
part of the hp98550 documentation.  You might try

  "Starbase Device Drivers Library Manual"
     "hp 9000 Series 300/800 Computers"
              p/n 98592-90015

This single manual covers ALL the hp9000 series displays cards
as they relate to Starbase graphics.  Some of the hardware
details are given, but not much.
