I think it is time for HP to consider releasing the source back to the public domain or making it release-quality software and releasing it or something. If enough people request it, maybe it will happen. I've wanted numerous things out of our news-reading software that the notes program can't provide (among them are the features you want, plus a few like storing the notes in a compressed format and providing an easier way to access the notesfiles with automatic scripts...). What I'd really like is the notes subject-compressed (base note with responses) interface structure on top of News's storage structure (one article per file). I'm looking for better news-readers...at the moment I'm looking at a couple of readers that run under GnuEmacs with the B-News directory structure.
