The MKS Toolkit cpio command will write large files across multiple discs
just fine, and has an option to include compression.  Put together with
their other marvelous programs in the package (making it probably the
most cost-effective commercial software package available) will allow the
user to make very sophisticated backup programs, and provide the capability
to make your DOS system intelligent in its being able to do things for you.
