If one substitutes "Display PostScript + NeXTStep" for "NeWS" much of this analysis applies. Sun, probably Bill Joy, used to be almost viciously opposed to X Windows, but now embrace it for commercial reasons. This analysis is given in the recently published "NeWS" book.
