It was Berkeley - the 4.3 "finger" filters out non-printables in ".project" and ".plan" files, and also filters them out of the output of a remote machine's "finger" service. That probably puts paid to the guy's hopes of a cute animated ".plan" file, although given the device-dependencies of same it's probably no great loss....
