I just tried the command suggested in the previous posting:

xwd | xpr -device ps -out file.PS

This doesn't work for color screens, as in the image must be in XY format.
So I'm posting the X11 version of my window dumper (xwps) in comp.sources.x.
It was originally ported under version 2 by a friend, so there are no 
guarantees that it will work.
