I have recieved 5 replys (so far), of which the most helpful was one Email
suggesting I use .signature, not .sig; .sig is only net.slang!!!

Only one was teasing (not flaming), and the other two Email and one followup
were suggesting a more local distribution for test, via 'Distribution' or via
posting to a local test group, or some combination.  So I checked and there is
a *very* local test group atc.test, to which I successfully posted with '.sig'
after changing it's name to '.signature'.

Thanks to one and all.

I am posting this here w/o restriction in case the summary is useful to others
with similar problem; not too unlikely.
