watfun restored accounts had GID "daemon"; changed all to "other".
The home directories and most files belonging to these users had GID
"news", while many newly created files were in group "daemon": chgrp'd
them all to "none".

Accounts "operator" and "hardware" had weird GIDs in /etc/passwd, and 
their files had different weird GIDs.   Made them look like orchid's.
