To throw in my two bits on stop signs, during the occupation of the 
Netherlands in WWII, the Germans outlawed the word "stop" on signs, as 
it was "too English".  They substituted the word "halt"...

[Note: "stop" is both Dutch and English, "halt" is Dutch, English _and_ 
German.  Image and perception, indeed.]
