This includes timely resolution of net problems, planning for expansion (nice to have stats that back up usage to present to people who control the budget ;-) ), and of course finding problems before they affect your users. Any device that is an integral part of the network that doesn't support CMIP, CMOT, or SNMP increases the work load in network support. This means that I have less time to write software or provide services. There is actually a lot about SNMP that is not IP specific. While the ip, icmp, tcp, udp, and egp mibs are IP specific, the system, interfaces, and parts of the at mib are not IP specific. Then, there is always the enterprise subtree (1.3.6.1.4.1) where Apple could put in Apple-specific variables. It would be nice if I could monitor the health of the entire network from one workstation, upgrade areas before congestion impacts performance, and diagnose / fix problems before they seriously impact users. I have this same complaint about Novell, Banyan, 3Com, and the current crop of twisted pair Ethernet products as well. -- just my two cents -- /mde/
