Thanks to those of you who tried to help me.  I've learned that it
doesn't pay to be an intermediary for net queries, if nothing else!

But I did get a good lead. Thank you.  I was pointed to Comer's book 
Internetworking with TCP/IP, which contains a chapter on domain naming.  
I also found some info in Comer's Operating System Design, Volume II.
That seemed to do the trick.
