Here's what I'd like to do:

I have an Amiga, a friend has a Mac.  We're going to endeavor to write some
software for both machines simultaniously.  We can send files to one another
via E-mail.  By using shar and uuencode/uudecode, we can get through the mail
system without any problem.  I would like any suggestions on how we can 
archive (via zoo, arc, stuffit, or others) these files in order to shrink
and/or encapsulate them.

Questions:

1) Is the archiving step necessary?  For the present, all files will be
   text (source).  We would like eventually to be able to xmit binaries.

2) Is there a common, reliable, bi-directional archiving program available
   for both machines?

3) Is something as costly/sophisticated as AMax or Mac2Dos necessary?
   I would like to keep this free/very low cost if possible.
