[for those who aren't aware of it, there is a difference between the system call `link()', described in section 2 of the Unix Programmer's Manual, and the `ln' command, described in section 1 of the manual. The `ln' command "protects" users from themselves by not even calling the `link()' system call if the target is a directory. This is why Fred's example works, and why attempts to do it with `ln' don't.
