Of the term programs I use or have used, I haven't found one that combines all the best features. Zlink is close (I use it once in a while but not often enough for me to justify the shareware fee, but I have faith the next version will be the right one), but it's missing the file manipulation commands (as of now) and the vt100 still needs a little work. Kermit's vt100 is the best I have ever had on my //c but it's lacking in user interface and file transfer options. My 2 biggest gripes with proterm are that it doesn't support my modem for dialing and the vt100 is terrible for my purposes. Besides the many nice features that have been bounced around here, there's one thing I'd like to see: better vt100. Do some sort of simulation of vt100 graphics characters (mousetext might handle most of them). Kermit does a real good job of this. Allow selection of cursor key modes - set vs reset, plus vt100 codes vs regular control chars vs maybe even vi cursor control chars - by the user. Similarly, let us define how we want to emulate the vt100 keypad. it's not necessarily good to have some combination like open-apple-1 be the keypad 1, because for most of us the relative location on the pad is more important than the number on the keys. Specifically, Yale ascii defines pf keys for use under cms which coincide with the physical layout of the keypad but not at ALL like the numbers. I like the way kermit handles this, too, with a pseudo-keypad. Of course a gs keypad could handle that. A simulated 132-col mode might be an interesting thing to have. Allow some mechanism of scrolling the screen sideways if 132 col mode is in effect. Allow turning off of highlighting (sometimes inverse text becomes annoying), speaker on/off, etc. INDEPENDENT of the vt100 setting. i.e. If a command gets sent that says in vt100 language 'enable the speaker' I want to be able to have said 'no speaker' in the past and still have no speaker (yes I know I can do that with the volume knob!) Resetting of vt100 to default settings. This is a nice feature of Zlink. A quick way to drop dtr and keep it dropped. Another nice Zlink feature. Sometimes I need to hang up my modem quick and keep it from answering the phone.
