I need to communicate with a mainframe running MVS/XA and an AS/400
running OS/400 (whatever that is). The applications include IPC (front-end
running on the local systems with the back-end on the mainframe), e-mail,
terminal emulation for login to the IBM's and RJE.

I've heard about a box from Mitek that should be connected to an Ethernet
(with TCP/IP) and an SNA network, but it is very expensive and depends
on host software that isn't available at all for UNIX now (only MVS and
VMS), and will only be for Ultrix, AIX and SunOS (the last I heard).
