Well, one quick and easy thing you could do is rebuild your desktop file. If you have a hard drive, the the desktop file can get pretty cluttered in a relatively short time, especially if you shift a lot of files around. While there are a number of programs that can do it for you, the easiest way is to start (or restart) your mac, and then hold down the command and option keys until it asks you whether or not you want the desktop to be rebuilt.
