I suggest GNU tar (anonymous ftp it from prep.ai.mit.edu, plus you'll want the diffs I posted here a couple weeks back). I currently use it to backup from our System V hosts (including two 4D's) to our BSD hosts, where our 1/2" tape drives are. Our 2 Gb drive is due to arrive within a week. With over 7 Gb online, you can imagine my excitement. I will now be able to transport our full backups on four tiny cartridges instead of 40 10-1/2" reels. Also, Since I'll no longer need to be present to mount tapes, our weekly and daily incremental backups will be run overnight, when nobody is online, and a little extra disk I/O won't be noticed.
