I will post a summary once the responses stop flowing in. I was interested in a few of the responses, though, that implied that color under MIT's X11.R3 ain't so slow. I have been using Purdue speedups and MIT fixes 1-10 on both a 3/60 (compiled with gcc) and a 386i (compiled using plain old cc). It's possible that I've done something stupid in building Xsun on either or both platforms, and that I missed some important optimization, or maybe my opinion of slow differs from someone else's. So, to avoid wasting hours possibly chasing my tail, can some kind soul out there in FTP land, who thinks that color isn't too slow, allow me to snarf his or her compiled Xsun for the Sun-3 and/or the 386i to see if it's any faster than the one I built.
