The @heading construct works with any of the following versions of texinfo.tex: emacs 18.55 has texinfo.tex Version 1.26 gcc 1.35 has texinfo.tex Version 1.23 gcc 1.35.97 has texinfo.tex Version 1.27 I recommend that you upgrade to use a newer version of texinfo.tex.
