Subject: add file for VMSmail extracted files broken?

I have noticed that when I attempt to add a group of mail messages that have
been extracted from VMS mail that the ADD FILE function of news does not
recognize the the VMS mail headers for the first message that has been extracted
into the file.  The sender is marked as "unknown" and the subject is marked as
"<NONE>".  We are running news 5.8A.  Is this a know problem and are there any
workarounds?
