First of all, the circuit works as is.  It seems that I have a pretty poor
excuse for a breadboard -- I jammed too many TRIACs with oversized leads
into it.  As a result, I had some infinite resistances I had to deal with.

The reply was amazing -- 7 notes in less than 24 hours, I've been posting
on a few different newsgroups off and on, but never did I get this kind of
response.
