Second best place to view a shuttle launch is on a boat in the Banana River, which runs very close to the launch pad. Security places you about 3-5 miles away; I honestly wouldn't want to be closer. I've gone swimming in my pool on Christmas (I live in Orlando, and can see the launches from the lake I live near) so it's unlikely to be a major consideration. Florida residents can call 800/432-2153 for the next-launch information, straight from NASA. Oddly enough, they're only listing shuttle launches on it now; the commercial rocket that just went up (yeah!) and previous non-shuttle launches were not recorded on the service. -- Don't trust that map entry.
