This sounds more like VM 4.10 than 4.11. "(something)" was probably `s' (vm-save-message). The typo was missed because it only causes trouble if vm-folder-directory is nil, and I can't think of anyone who doesn't use a folder directory. In any case the latest version of VM is 4.41.
