When both are used you can throw a bijizillion ICMP Echo packets real quickly at a host and see what routes, and how many of each, the packets are taking. I can mail you all the applicable stuff if you'd like. I'd also include some kernel mods to make 4.3BSD systems do the right thing with ICMP Echo packets w/options.
