Unfortunately, it is very easy for those of us on the warm, cheery Internet
to forget that the vast and overwhelming majority of hosts networked today
are connected in their own proprietary fashion over a plethora of differing
protocols and hardware.  NetBIOS is the only unifying theme in this discord.
