I think the consensus was there was an early issue of MacTutor that showed how to do it in an amusing but inefficient way, and there was a recent issue of MacTutor (this year sometime) that shows how to do it right. It's in an article on TextEdit itself, so you shouldn't have much trouble identifying the article (that is, it has "TextEdit" (and maybe "Offscreen") in its title).
